Hobart Cemetery alias Crystal Springs Farm Cemetery (1793)

  • Location: Set back in the woods on a hill just north of the intersection of Route 27 with Franklin St. Approximately 42.043427,-70.900999.
  • Condition: Very overgrown, many small trees and bushes growing throughout the cemetery, leaves covering many of the stones, almost all of which have been knocked over. Recently a rough fence has been added to its border made out of sticks and rope.

Excerpt from History of the Town of Hanson:

Small private burial lots are still seen in and about town but not used. One is on a knoll at the bend on the road just west of Poor Meadow Brook. It is thought to have been connected with the community church, built in 1788, just across the road. Stones in this old cemetery are on the “Crystal Springs” farm owned (1960) by E. Allen Anderson.

In Joseph B. White’s History of Houses in Hanson, Mass. (1932), Hobart Cemetery was identified as Plan No. 1, House No. 23 as Hobart Cemetery on Main Street. Joseph B. White reported that the cemetery was “Occupied by the Hobart family and on the oldest stone is this inscription: “In Memory of Jane Hobart, wife of Thomas Hobart, died Oct. 15, 1791 Age 65 yrs.” There is also a stone erected to Thomas Hobart who died Jan. 30, 1794, aged 68 years”.


According to Elmer Harding’s death certificate, he was buried at Hobart Cemetery. Elmer H. Harding, son of Alpheus C. and Hannah C. (Hobart) Harding, born in Hanson 29 May 1848, died in Halifax, Plymouth, Mass. 30 March 1922.
